The Digital Transportation Exchange (DTE) is an online platform which seeks and supports innovation in global transportation initiatives. The US Department of Transportation (DOT) is championing this construct. Here is more info from their site at http://www.dot.gov/open/dte:

The Digital Transportation Exchange (DTE) would connect citizens, businesses, state and local governments, industry, entrepreneurs, researchers, and investors though a public private partnership like never before—creating a thriving marketplace for transportation solutions.

The DOT is interested in (1) engaging a wide variety of stakeholders on the potential for this initiative to connect people and technology for transportation innovation and (2) identifying partners to launch and manage this platform.

It is really easy to participate in this marketplace of ideas. As far as I can tell, the most critical criteria you will need to meet in order to engage in this idea exchange is a willingness to collaborate and contribute to this very important mission. DOT is investing in supporting this community and this support will be critical to its success, but the ideas and willing collaboration by savvy technologists and experienced transportation professionals as well as private citizens with a desire to improve the world are what is really required.

I plan on engaging with this group and I hope to interact with you there.

Here is more context from DOT CIO Nitin Pradhan:

Innovation in the transportation sector is increasingly spurred through the use of Web 2.0 technologies. Fundamental to this innovation is the ability to rapidly build and maintain useful networks of people and ideas, collaborate with public and private partners, and pair venture capital with entrepreneurs. In the interest of promoting economic growth and effective, efficient government, the U.S. Department of Transportation Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) is excited to pioneer the development of a Web 2.0 community–the Digital Transportation Exchange, or DTE.

The Digital Transportation Exchange (DTE) would connect citizens, businesses, state and local governments, industry, entrepreneurs, researchers, and investors though a public private partnership like never before—creating a thriving online marketplace for the agile creation of transportation solutions. The OCIO will champion this initiative and make DTE a dynamic dialogue forum where private stakeholders can easily form partnerships with DOT agencies and each other, enabling rapid innovation in America’s transportation community. To view more information on DTE, I encourage you to explore the concept online at http://www.dot.gov/open/DTE/.

Please look over the DTE site and please help spread the word to others.  This is a critically important step at this formative time. See: http://www.dot.gov/open/DTE/
