Cloudy Conditions
Recently Symantec made a decision to discontinue their cloud based backup solution and are recommending their end users resort to an on premise solution. Is this a step backwards? In our opinion, there are several inconveniences that have arisen from this announcement. A few for example:
- Managed Service Providers must reach out to their customers and notify them that they require a new backup solution because their existing cloud based solution is no longer offered – this puts the Service Provider in an awkward situation that nobody wants to experience
- Managed Service Providers must either find a new cloud solution or suggest an on premise one – and why would they suggest an on-prem solution when their customers want a cost effective cloud-based solution
- If you’re running Symantec Backup Exec.cloud you will have to find a new cloud solution or revert to an on-premise solution
Why On-Premise is a Pain
One might consider that going from a cloud solution, where your data is backed up in multiple locations, and accessible almost instantly, and without the need to manage any internal infrastructure, to an on-premise solution is a step in the reverse direction. At Asigra, we’re baffled to understand why anyone would consider this solution considering that almost every technology is headed to the cloud, and cloud technology is not only becoming more mainstream, it’s also more affordable, easier to manage and trust worthy.
There is a Silver Lining
So let’s get back to our first scenario. How do you avoid your backup provider from abandoning the cloud and from abandoning you? Well for starters, Asigra has fostered a strong worldwide ecosystem of multiple partners (in the hundreds) who all provide a secure cloud backup and recovery solution. What does this mean? In the unlikely event your provider closes up shop, you are only a phone call away from finding a local Asigra Partner and an easy transition.
