In Australia and New Zealand we have a great store called Dick Smith Electronics (founded by the Australian Entrepreneur, Dick Smith). 20 years ago this was the store that inspired my love of electronics. They had a wide range of kitsets, starting from things that were very simple for kids to put together. It was this love of electronics that led to my love of computers and set me on the career path that I have had to date.
20 years later the store has change focus somewhat. It is not so much about ‘electronics’ but is instead much more about ‘consumer electronics’. But down the back you can still find the kits in most stores, and they are exactly the same as the ones they had back then. This week I tried one of the kits out with my kids. Not sure they are old enough to tell if they share the same passion for technology that I do yet (they are 6 & 7) however they were certainly somewhat surprised when we put a handful of components together and constructed a radio.
I had forgotten what great fun electronics is and if they kids are interested I’m sure we’ll try some more adventuress projects as they get older.
